Part II looks at the work of six carvers in Orleans and three in Sandwich: The Orleans carvers are: Josiah Sparrow II (1817-1847), Oliver N. Linnell (1816-1892), Thomas A. Hopkins (1826-1909), Daniel Higgins, Jr. (1837-1857), Winthrop M. Crosby (1840- 1912) and his brother Henry T. Crosby (1845-1915) The Sandwich carvers are: James Thompson (1826 -1909), Joshua T. Faunce (1833-1893) and Edwin B. Nye (1834-1889). Besides the growing standardization of design we find in these later carvers, we also find a more definite development in the stonecutting trade itself--away from the craft apprentice system to more recognizably contemporary forms of business.
