This two-part essay examines the work of thirteen stonecutters on Cape Cod from 1834 through 1870 who worked exclusively (or primarily) in marble. It was William Sturgis (1772-1858) who pioneered marble carving on the Cape and either directly or indirectly affected the carving styles and careers of the other twelve men. Part I examines his life and work as well as that of his son Josiah Sturgis (1816-1897), his son-in-law Jabez M. Fisher (1803-1879) and Jabez's son William S. Fisher (1830-1907).
